Municipal By-law and Regulatory Services Branch

By-laws include:
  • animal care and control
  • care of streets
  • minimum temperature (rental units)
  • parking
  • inadequate yard maintenance
  • business licensing
  • discharge of firearms
  • fence height
  • noise
  • park
  • pool enclosures
  • portable and temporary signs
  • smoking in a public place or workplace
  • taxis
  • weeds
Unless the matter goes to court, the resident's name, address and telephone number will be kept confidential. Usually, a courtesy warning is issued for a first offense. Should the matter proceed to Court it may be necessary for the complainant to attend as witness to the violation or the case may be dismissed.

Application Process
Report a possible by-law violation related to the following on serviceottawa.ca:
  • animal care and control
  • care of streets
  • minimum temperature (rental units)
  • parking
  • inadequate yard maintenance

Call 3-1-1 to report a possible violation related to the issues mentioned above or the following:
  • business licensing
  • discharge of firearms
  • fence height
  • noise
  • park
  • pool enclosures
  • portable and temporary signs
  • smoking in a public place or workplace
  • taxis
  • weeds

A service request can also be put in for wildlife sightings (for example, coyotes) by calling 3-1-1
  • In case of immediate threat, call 9-1-1.
  • In case of being bitten or scratched, call Ottawa Public health at 613-580-6744.
