Searching for Child Abuse Services

Children and adolescents aged 5 to 16 meet in small groups to deal with the impact of the violence they witnessed in the home

Concurrently, the mothers attend separate sessions to discuss the impact of domestic violence on their children and learn parenting and coping strategies

This program helps parents/caregivers create respectful adult relationships and a positive co-parenting approach with their children
Offering:

Both parents go into their separate groups that run concurrently

Mental health and addictions team provides mental health wellness services that are culturally safe and trauma-informed for members of the urban community who self-identify as having Indigenous ancestry

Child and Youth Services - working with children and youth ages 6 years to 24 years. Also work with parents, families, caregivers and child protection professionals in providing culturally safe mental health services

Adult Services - available to individuals age 25 years and older experiencing mental health issues / psychosocial stressors that are interfering with mental wellness

• advocacy
• provide pathways to promote healing through a holistic approach ( physical, mental, emotional, spiritual)
• assisting with Navigating the Health Care System
• navigation/accessing services and programs
• linkage to specialized services for mental health and addictions
• accompany youth to their medical appointments (upon request)
• assist with social determinants of health that impact an individual's mental health (i.e. identification, housing, food security, life skills)

Family resource centre staffed with Early Childhood Educators and Social Workers designed to promote and enhance family living and foster independence and health among participants, families, and individuals

Designed for use by unrepresented litigants who need assistance with family law cases as they relate to court processes

Provides information and assistance to support participation in and understanding of the criminal court process

• services begin once police have laid charges and continue until the court case is over
• information about victims' rights, the criminal justice process and their specific case (e.g., court dates)

Vulnerable Victims and Family Fund -- financial and court-based supports to enable victims of crime and families of homicide victims to attend court

General Support Services:
Guidance, advocacy, support and counselling to Deaf and hard of hearing individuals who need assistance managing everyday life events such as completing government forms, navigating systems, and coping with hearing loss

Includes help with:

• completing forms and applications
• renewing driver's license and health card
• navigating government services
• attend meetings with yourself where additional support is needed

Hearing Care Counselling Services Ages 55+:
Assists seniors with hearing loss * Services include assessment and support for seniors with hearing loss to develop, maintain, or augment sensory capacity and promote maximum independence

Hearing Care Counsellor Program includes:

• virtual visits (or home visits as required)
• education
• demonstrate and recommend communication devices
• facilitate hard of hearing support groups
• teach hearing help classes and workshops

Hearing Care Counselling also provides in-service training to supportive housing, retirement homes and long-term care facilities

This program helps youth, who have a history of involvement with Children's Aid Society (CAS), find and access adult services and resources and make the transition Youth In Transition Worker helps youth to make plans and decisions regarding: housing education health care life skills employment personal goals & well being

Sexual abuse prevention program offered for free to anyone in the community

• based on human rights language and concepts of emotional literacy

Counselling, information, referrals, and advocacy support are available to survivors of all genders of child sexual abuse, incest, and sexual assault, as well as their support persons

Immediate support, as well as accompaniment to hospital, police or court, is available through the 24-hour crisis and support line

Community education and presentations are available to community members and groups upon request

Administration office provides support to all St Leonard's programs, services, and residences in the community

Immediate crisis telephone counselling

Counsellors are skilled in Brief Solution Focused Therapy and Crisis Intervention to provide the following:

• Crisis Outreach and Support Team (COAST) referrals
• connection to addiction services
• safety and crisis planning
• coping skills and self-soothing management
• referrals and connections to on-going service as required
• Naloxone kits and harm reduction supplies

Victim Quick Response Program+ (VQRP+) - program of last resort where no other available private or public resource is available

Victim Crisis Assistance Ontario - On-site early intervention and crisis intervention

• needs assessment
• safety planning
• referrals to community services
• enhanced support for vulnerable victims
• assistance with applications to VQRP+

Victim Quick Response Program+ (VQRP+) -- assistance with emergency expenses related to the eligible incident, may include home safety, accommodation, meals, transportation, basic necessities, dependent care costs, counselling, traditional Indigenous health services, cellular phones, vision care, dental care, aids for victims with disabilities, interpretation services, crime scene cleanup, government/medical documents and funeral expenses

• additional assistance for victims of human trafficking includes storage locker, tattoo removal, and treatment at a recovery facility
• no direct reimbursements are made to victims for the support listed above
• financial support is also available for victims who sustained serious physical injuries during a crime and for parents of homicide victims and spouses of homicide victims

Intensive treatment, rehabilitation and supports, including peer support, for eligible adults with serious mental illness and addictions

• team members work with individuals in their home, place of work and other chosen environments
  
• supports eligible individuals by assisting with medication, housing, finances, employment and life skills

Counselling services aim to support children/youth and their families by:

• addressing identified needs and challenges
  
• strengthening awareness and understanding of the challenges and why they might be occurring
  
• reducing the severity of mental health problems or symptoms
  
• strengthening coping strategies,and reducing the need for more intensive services

Counselling services can be provided for children and youth experiencing:

• changes in mood swings or suddenly feeling anxious, sad, tearful, worried
  
• problems at school: with learning performance, peers and/or classroom behavior; sudden changes in daily patterns
  
• difficulty sleeping or staying asleep or problems with appetite
  
• an increase in physical complaints: stomach ache, headache, not feeling well
  
• behavioural changes: excessive anger, acting out (hitting, fighting, extreme tantrums, stealing); bedwetting
  
• decreased interest in previously enjoyed: hobbies, foods, activities

Counselling services are open to all, but priority is given to children and youth with serious mental health concerns such as harm to self and/or other including suicidal ideation/attempts and/or hospitalization

The program offers:

• individual and family counselling
  
• parent education and support, individually or in groups
  
• therapeutic groups for children and youth
  
• case management and referral to other services
  
• TAPP-C (The Arson Prevention Program for Children) assessments, in partnership with Brantford and Brant County Fire Departments
  
• distance counselling via telephone or video conference

Skill-building and support services enable the family, including siblings, parents and/or guardians to better address a child or youth's mental health issues by changing attitudes and behaviours, providing support as they adjust to new diagnoses, building skills and competencies, and/or creating awareness and resiliency


Family/caregiver skill-building and support services may include the provision of effective parenting strategies as well as access to peer supports to promote resilience and positive child/youth/family functioning

Respite Program - provides respite services to children and youth with identified mental health concerns who require short-term relief from families and caregivers to allow them to recharge and reflect. The Respite Program is tailored to the needs of the child or youth and their family. The program provides activities and programming that promote skill development and help build self-confidence and independence. Improving social skills and making friends are also part of the program

Respite is offered in a variety of ways including:

• weekly one-on-one sessions
• social groups
• Summer / Winter / March Break programming
• P.A. Day programming

Overnight opportunities may be explored; and Virtual respite groups and/or individual programming

Programs directed to children and adolescents experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. These age-specific programs include office-based individual and family counselling, group therapy, suicide prevention, day treatment, and intensive services

• Office-based counselling provides support to families whose children and youth struggle with mental health concerns, school difficulties, family conflict, divorce, trauma, grief, addictions, behavioural concerns, suicide concerns, suicidal ideation, and general counselling

• Intensive Services are directed toward families of children (0-18 years) * This program offers counselling and support, parenting strategies, consultation, and support to schools, parenting groups, and children's programs

• Tele-Mental Health provides Program Consultations, an Educational Component, and Direct Consultations with Child Psychiatrists throughout Ontario using video conferencing

Provides services to individuals who are being abused, are abusive and/or at risk for abuse.

Outreach Services available:

• Intake - the first person a client will speak to, whether by the Crisis Line or walk-in. The Intake Worker will complete the Intake package with the client to determine the appropriate programs and services
• Transitional Support Services - provides supportive, individual long and short-term transitional planning, safety planning, advocacy and referral services to individuals who are seeking violence-free lives and a holistic well-being
